A Macclesfield grocers will serve our town for the final time this weekend.

Fisher's Florist and Greengrocers on 217 Buxton Road will sell their last items to customers on Saturday October 30.

Despite the rise of the supermarket and a Co-op just across the road, Fisher's has thrived by a personal service since 1981.

The family-ran business by Denise, Barry and Wendy Fisher, which also employs Wendy's husband Colin, has been sold to a new buyer.

New storeowner Lynn who has her own plans for a shop in 2022.

Macclesfield Nub News spoke to Barry and Denise, ahead of their final days of service.

"The shop hasn't changed over the 40 years. A lot of customers say when they come in that 'it is like going back in time'," said Denise.

"We've added a bit. The flowers was already a part of the business with the previous owners Mr and Mrs Ludlow, but we increased it."

"A lot of the customers are like family, which we know by a first-name basis.

"We've had one customer who had been with us the whole time we have been here."

Their customers aren't just near Buxton Road. They serve Langley, Bollington and Prestbury who have been loyal to them for decades.

They made the decision to retire before lockdown, during the month of their 40th anniversary.

The company turned 40 in August, but opted to go on for a little longer selling pumpkins and autumn vegetables, before closing their doors for the last time on Saturday.

While Denise is fully-retiring, Barry Fisher will hope to work semi-retired for a few more years driving his van which he has delivered goods from his store to Macclesfield for.

"My favourite thing over the past 40 years is watching someone smile when you deliver a bouquet they weren't expecting", said Barry.

"We feel privileged to have such friendly and loyal customers."

The dawn of the March 2020 lockdown saw the store go from 20 food orders a week to 120 in just three days.

They have also provided a grocery delivery service to those who have returned from Macclesfield Hospital, for free, paid for by the British Red Cross.

This was an initiative they have done for decades, but ramped up during the pandemic.

Customer John said: "The vegetables and fruit at Fisher's are always excellent quality. The raspberries are perfectly-formed.

"The flowers are fresh and Denise really knows her stuff."

Another customer, Marjorie added: "Fisher's have provided a wonderful service to their customers over these years looking after older customers with extra care and help, delivering all sorts of goods not even stocked in the shop and becoming friends to everyone.

"Nothing is too much trouble and their flower arrangements have always been amazing.

"A big thank you to them from myself, and the people of Macclesfield."

If you can't visit the store, you can comment your memories and well-wishes on Facebook.
