Macclesfield man wants a mural of the town's other music hero

A Macclesfield man wants another mural in town, honouring Silktown's 'other' music hero.
Macclesfield resident Alan Lord has suggested that the town should produce street art celebrating the late John Mayall.
The blues legend died in July 2024, aged 90, and was one of the world's oldest active musicians until he passed.
Often called the 'Godfather' of British blues, John Mayall was born in Macclesfield, and would later go on to play with Eric Clapton and members out of Fleetwood Mac.
Given the fact Macclesfield already has two murals of their 'other' famous musical son Ian Curtis, the idea of a Mayall mural does not seem that farfetched.
And local fan Alan Lord even has an idea about where he would want a mural of Mayall to go.
Speaking online, Alan wrote, "Macclesfield has a great mural to mark the life of Ian Curtis, which certainly helps bring quite a few people to the town," he said.
"For many years I have felt we should have another [mural] of Macclesfield's music legends, John Mayall, the Father of British Blues similarly recognised."
"After spending some time looking at suitable sites, I thought that this building many will recognise on the corner of Chestergate and Churchill Way might work.
"It would be seen by many entering the town along Chestergate.
"Mayall himself was born at The Spread Eagle public house (now long gone), which was at the junction of Bridge Street and Chestergate.
"Mayall was born on November 29 1933, and died on July 22 2024."
Mr Lord even created a crude mock-up of a potential mural, which you can view on social media. 158 people have 'liked' his suggestion on social media.
One commenter wrote "Absolutely! Mayall did more for music than anybody in Europe from the 60's onwards influencing most bands and artists."
One even suggested that the mural should actually go on Charles Roe House, across the road.
Another commenter argued that a statue may be even better.
There is one flaw however, to the Mayall fan's proposed site, on the wall to the left of Macclesfield Pound Plus, as there have been hopes that flats could be built there. (Albeit, permission was refused earlier this year).
If plans were to resurface, the heritage value of a mural and the disruption it could cause would likely have to also be considered for any potential residents.
Some might say Mayall's influence even elapsed Joy Division and Ian Curtis. His achievements also include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is something Joy Division or New Order can say. He was also an OBE. You can listen to Mayall's music on THIS LINK.
Cheshire East Council, who delivered the larger of the two Ian Curtis murals in Macclesfield, on Mill Street, has been contacted for comment.
