Nine one bedroom flats are wanted atop a Macclesfield pound shop.

Macclesfield Pound Plus, of 53 Chestergate on the corner backing onto Churchill Way, is the latest high street site set to welcome accommodation on the upper floors.

That's if a just-submitted Cheshire East planning application gets approved.

The planning documents - while at one point erroneously referring the site of the plans to be in Stockport - state that the two floors (now used as storage units) 'is for conversion of upper floors of existing building to residential use, with three additional apartments created in the extension to the rear'.

The site is also known as Tudor House. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

No new car parking spaces will be created if the new flats get the go-ahead, but ten bike slots will be.

A planning document claims there will be "minimal elevational changes to [the] existing [building]."

And that "the proposed extension is in similar language to existing property, with matching materiality, scale and fenestration."

"All apartments are in excess of National Housing Space Standards, with large windows to all habitable spaces, providing good natural light to the interior and benefit from well proportioned rooms within.

"Shared bin storage will be located to the rear of the properties in a courtyard, accessed from internal circulation core.. It will be used by all apartments within the building."

While it could be good news for the shop below, members of the public have already gave their opinion over the proposed living quarters.

A representative for Charles Roe House across the road reads: "...[sic] the property has become an eyesore in Macclefield's Town Centre conservation area.

"This directly affects Macclesfield's ability to attract high spending shoppers and regenerate. Please consider this in your plans for ongoing ground floor retail use of the property."

Another welcomed the idea of nine flats above Macclesfield Pound Plus. It read: "The proposal continues the trend for underused commercial floorspace in the town centre to be converted to residential accommodation. This is to be welcomed in terms of sustaining the town centre and providing small units of accommodation."

A decision is earmarked next month, and you can have your say HERE.
