Swimmers have raised thousands of pounds in memory of a Macclesfield teenager.

Satellites Swimming Club members took on a 200km 24-hour swimathon over the weekend of September 5 and 6.

In doing so, they have raised almost £10,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) in memory of 19-year-old Mia Jennings, helping to bring further potentially life-saving cardiac screening to the Macclesfield area.

Satellites chairman Adam said: "What our swimmers have achieved is incredible. We set ourselves an ambitious challenge of 100km in 24 hours and the club came together to swim well over twice that distance.

"But the distance is only part of the story. Mia meant a great deal to people within our swimming community and it was important that we did something positive in her memory.

"To have raised almost £10,000, with half going to Mia's CRY fund and potentially helping young people here in the Macclesfield area access more cardiac screenings, makes every length swum and every donation incredibly worthwhile.

"We're hugely grateful to every swimmer who took part, everyone who helped us through the 24 hours and every person who donated or shared our fundraising page."

Mia worked as part of the teaching and HR teams at Macclesfield Leisure Centre and was a familiar and much-loved face to the Satellites community.

She taught many of the club's younger swimmers and was well known among its coaching team.

Tragically, she passed away on January 21, 2023, after suffering a cardiac arrest at just 19-years-old.

Money raised through the memorial fund set up in her honour will help towards organising a future CRY cardiac screening session in the Macclesfield area, giving young people from across the wider community – including eligible Satellites swimmers – the opportunity to be screened.

The Mayor of Macclesfield, councillor James Barber-Chadwick, said: "I got the chance to meet some of the club's members and committee members, and had great conversations about how the wider benefits of swimming, and how we can work to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to access it.

"As CRY are one of my two Mayoral charities, I was immensely proud to support this event, and my sincere thanks go to Adam, Nicola and all at Satellites for the work they do for our communities."
