Mother's Day is this weekend, and there will be plenty of events across town. But perhaps none quite like this...

The Salvation Army in Macclesfield is to offer warmth and comfort at a Mother's Day Shelter for those in the community struggling with the occasion.

The church and charity, located on Roe Street, will be holding a special service on Saturday, March 18, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm to mark Mother's Day and is affectionately being called a Mother's Day Shelter.

The shelter is for anyone that feels the need to use the service including those who have lost mothers or children, those who are longing to be mothers and those who have a difficult relationship with their mothers or children.

Territorial Envoy Alice Swain, church leader of The Salvation Army in Macclesfield is a mother to an adopted daughter but has struggled in the past with Mother's Day owing to infertility and understands the complexities to the occasion, so created the Mother's Day Shelter.

She said: "Mother's Day and the build-up can be a really tough time for so many people, for many different reasons, and we understand how important channelling that pain is.

"We created the Mother's Day Shelter as a safe space, where everyone is welcome, to grieve, reflect and meet with God, as well as others who may be in similar situations, joining together to give an alternative to the often painful day that lies ahead, allowing them to be and feel seen."

The multi-church event, which also includes assistance from a chaplain at East Cheshire Hospice, will offer spiritual as well as practical support and The Salvation Army will be able to signpost to partner organisations for further support where necessary.
