Macclesfield MP 'remains committed' to fighting for trans rights

Macclesfield's MP has reaffirmed his support for trans rights.
Tim Roca is among 363 MPs to vote against an amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill.
This would have forced public bodies to collect data on the basis of 'sex' as recently defined by the Supreme Court.
Mr Roca said: "While I support the wider goals of transparency and accountability in data use, I had serious concerns about the risks this amendment posed to the privacy and safety of my trans constituents.
"As drafted, it lacked vital safeguards to prevent the misuse or inappropriate disclosure of sensitive personal data - including information that could be used to out or target trans people.
"Protecting the rights and dignity of trans individuals requires thoughtful, responsible legislation. I could not support a measure that might inadvertently undermine that protection.
"We must do better. This week, and every week, I stand with the trans community and remain committed to fighting for equality, compassion, and a society where everyone can live freely and safely.
"Trans rights are human rights."
The vote took place on Tuesday (May 7) during Trans+ History Week.
Mr Roca added: "This Trans History Week, we honour the lives, contributions and resilience of trans people throughout history - and recommit ourselves to standing alongside the trans community today.
"As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I was proud to have signed an Early Day Motion in Parliament recognising Trans History Week and the vital contributions trans people have made to our shared history and culture.
"But this year's reflections come at a deeply concerning time. The recent Supreme Court ruling has caused real anxiety for many, and the UK's sharp fall in the Rainbow Europe rankings for LGBTQ+ rights is a stark warning that progress is being eroded."
