Macclesfield Nub News to interview Broken Cross and Upton by-election candidates

By Alex Greensmith 30th Mar 2022

A by-election to elect a new Macclesfield Town Councillor will take place on Thursday April 7.

This follows the resignation of Councillor Fin Shenton - who was the youngest serving Macclesfield Town Councillor.

Three candidates are standing to contest the vacant seat in the Broken Cross and Upton ward, on Macclesfield Town Council.

Phoebe Buxton is standing for the Green Party.

Gareth Jones is standing for the Conservative Party.

Ruth Thompson is standing for the Labour Party.

There are no other candidates.

In 2019, an Independent candidate also stood. However, it will only be the three aforementioned candidates contesting this time.

Polls will be open from 7am on Thursday April 7.

Macclesfield Nub News will post interviews with all of the candidates standing.

In the interest of fairness, they will be asked almost identically the same questions, and will have separate articles of a similar word count.

The trio of articles will be posted later this week, with the first article published being selected at random.

Macclesfield Town Council are responsible for public services such as allotments, making the town attractive (Town Ranger), along with calendar events like Remembrance Day and the Christmas lights switch-on.

Macclesfield Town Council is made up of 12 Councillors, who represent the seven wards of Macclesfield.

Each year, two of the councillors serve as Macclesfield's Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Labour has the most councillors elected, with eight of the current positions being Labour.

This number was nine before Cllr Fin Shenton resigned, triggering the by-election.

The elected candidate will serve the Broken Cross and Upton Ward alongside Labour's Chris Wilcock.

The turnout at the last Broken Cross and Upton ward poll in May 2019 was 66.1%.

The last Macclesfield Town Council By-election happened in May 2021, and was won by Labour Macclesfield Central Ward candidate Sandy Livingstone.

Macclesfield Town Council was founded in 2015.
