A father has thanked the community for raising almost £40,000 for charity in memory of his daughter.

West Macclesfield resident James Jennings has thanked Macclesfield for raising awareness and funds for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, in memory of his daughter Mia.

Mia, who passed away on January 21 2023, has had family, friends and the generous people of Macclesfield donate to the good cause in her honour.

And there is one final fundraiser for 2023, with prizes to be won, as a way of thanking those who have supported the family and their fundraising projects.

James Jennings, who works in Macclesfield's pharmaceutical industry, said: "The Bulls Head in Broken Cross will be hosting a raffle in remembrance of Mia, in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young.

"It costs £1 for a ticket, or £5 a strip. Prizes include two Christmas hampers and a gift set by Heineken."

"We will have achieved over £40,000 this year, all of which has gone to Cardiac Risk in the Young

"Thank you to everybody for supporting the family and the charity, and making it possible to raise that amount of money.

"But awareness is the most important thing to me, the money is a bonus."

Tickets can be bought behind the bar at The Bulls Head, the draw will take place on Thursday December 21, as part of their Christmas Jumper Bumper Quiz Night.

"This place has been a bit of a sanctuary," explained James.

"It was the first place myself and Louise [Mia's mum] went out to.

"The Bull is a great, family community pub. They have been so supportive.

"They have a Cardiac Risk in the Young charity pot on the bar, that has been there for nearly 12 months. The pot alone has raised £750 so far.

"They also did a bake sale in the pub raising £145 for CRY."

For The Bulls Head landlord Ian Parker, helping out locals like James is exactly what the pub is all about.

"We try and do any ideas the community brings to us", said Ian.

"We were going to do a raffle for Christmas anyway. So doing this for CRY is a great way to make money for the memorial fund.

"The prizes have come from locals from the pub, I've put two hampers in.

"What is great about supporting this is, we know exactly where the money goes, it is going to provide tests for our children."

The £40,000 already raised will help young people across the country, and even in Macclesfield get tested, with screening dates already planned in Macclesfield next year.

Ian's children are even booked in for a screening, and Mia's colleagues will be hosting a screening day next month at Macclesfield Leisure Centre.

"From my point of view we try and support James, Louise and the rest of the family as much as we can," explained Ian.

"We try to create an environment here that is a safe, fun, community place where people can come in for a chat.

"I see this pub at the centre of the community, everything starts here. This is the hub, people can pop in, and they feel at ease to come in.

"Everyone that comes in here are so generous, not just with money but in character too.

"If anyone wants to come to the pub for a talk, or just sit in silence, that is what we are here for as a community pub."

The pub's seven staff, and Ian's family members, create a warm and welcoming atmosphere to The Bulls Head.

And helping out with CRY's fundraising is not the only big plans Ian - landlord since October 2022 - has planned for The Bulls Head.

Ian plans to do a summer concert next year, having spent big on sprucing up their beer garden. This will get more punters in the pub, and also increase the chances that they may donate to CRY with their charity pots scattered all over the pub.

Whilst the year has almost to an end, what will not stop is James, and the wider Macclesfield community's outpouring of support for Cardiac Risk in the Young, in memory of the late Mia Jennings.

To put the £40,000 in perspective, a heart screening costs roughly £65 per person, so in theory it could pay for 615 teenagers and young adults to get their hearts screened.
