Almost 2500 people have signed a petition opposing the closure of two tips near Macclesfield.

Bollington and Poynton tip face an uncertain future, after a consultation into their future was announced last week.

Both could be set for the scrapheap, leaving Macclesfield's Danes Moss Household Waste Recycling Centre the nearest tip for both of the two towns.

Cheshire East Council is currently proposing to hold a public consultation on future household waste and recycling provision, which in addition to Poynton and Bollington, could see Middlewich tip close too.

Along with Macclesfield, other remaining local options to safely dump anything from asbestos to wood, are at Crewe, Alsager and Knutsford. These four sites these are safe from this current potential round of cuts.

Sutton resident Trevor Priestman, who is also a Liberal Democrat parish councillor in the Macclesfield parish, has started a petition opposing the closure of both Bollington's Albert Road tip, and Poynton's Anson Road tip.

"Given that Cheshire East's new 'Green Bin Charge' is coming into force in January, the closure of these sites will greatly impact local residents who choose not to sign up to the new scheme," he wrote on the Change.org page.

"Furthermore, it will heighten the risk of fly tipping across the Borough, something that the impending Green Bin Tax has already increased.

"We call on Cheshire East Council to look at all options to maintain the current number of waste recycling sites, and to cease the proposal of the closure of the Middlewich, Poynton, and Bollington sites."

His petition has so far collected over 1600 signatures for a petition opposing proposed closures. The petition can be found at this link.

Trevor added in a further statement to Macclesfield Nub News: "The closures would affect Macclesfield as a whole and not just Poynton and Bollington.

"There will already be an increase of traffic around Lyme Green/London Road when the Lyme Green development is fully finished and occupied.

"Closures of the HWRC in Bollington and Poynton would increase traffic around this area, with more people needing to access the HWRC on Congleton Road."

Macclesfield tip was ruled to be safe from the current consultation of closures last month.

Macclesfield Nub News will post about the consultation link, when it is ready.

The current Cheshire East Council administration is a Labour-Independent coalition. This would be the first three tip closures since the May 2023 elections, with the last being in Congleton under the last Labour-Independent coalition in September 2021.

The proposals come three months before Cheshire East Council is set to introduce a £56 fee to residents to collect garden waste per year.

All seven Cheshire East tips currently open - including Poynton and Bollington - can be visited from 8.30am to 4pm (October to March).
