UPDATE 9/2/23: After further clarification by Macclesfield Nub News the Ukrainian flag will fly on Friday February 24.

Cheshire East Council will fly the rainbow flag with pride to celebrate LGBT+ History Month.

The month-long celebrations take place every February and mark the contribution that LGBT+ people have made to society and their communities over the years.

They'll raise the flag across three of their buildings across Cheshire East, with one being Macclesfield Town Hall.

The rainbow flag will fly at the Market Place municipal building from Monday to Friday during February. The Ukrainian flag will fly at weekends.

LGBT+ History Month is a celebration of the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements. It aims to strengthen the community and provide role models, while also spotlighting the contributions of the LGBT+ community to society.

This means February will see eight days of the Ukrainian flag being raised above Macclesfield Town Hall, and 20 for the rainbow flag.

However, given these rules, the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine will see the rainbow flag being scheduled to be raised, as it falls on Friday February 24. Cheshire East Council has been sought for further clarification regarding this.

January saw the Cheshire East flag also flown at half and full mast at Macclesfield Town Hall, following the passing of a Macclesfield councillor.

Councillor Marilyn Houston, Cheshire East Council's member equality champion, said: "The council has made great progress in supporting those of us in our LGBT+ community in recent years. Pride, or Virtual Pride as it was during the Covid pandemic, has been a big part of that and continues to grow as we celebrate all our diverse communities."
