Macclesfield: Windyway Trust's longest-serving volunteer turns 80
One of the longest-serving volunteers of a Macclesfield animal charity has had his efforts recognised with a big birthday party.
Mike Droy (80), who has lived in the Macclesfield for 60 years, has been affiliated with The Windyway Trust for just as long.
The Macclesfield animal good cause has an animal shelter near Tegg's Nose, two charity shops on Chestergate, and a stock room on Crompton Road.
Mike first took in a dog from The Windyway Trust in 1963, after he moved to Prestbury, rescuing two golden retrievers.
Since then, he has taken in more than 20 dogs. And was also one of the first volunteers at The Windyway Trust charity shops on Chestergate, 15 years ago.
"I love the friendship from all the staff I have had at Windyways over the years and helping the animals. "It is so worthwhile", he said.
Mike volunteers at the two charity shops on Chestergate, on an as needed basis.
His favourite shifts to work are Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, as well as Treacle Sundays.
"Happy 80th Birthday to our wonderful volunteer Mike," said The Windyway Trust.
"We're so grateful to be able to celebrate this milestone birthday with him and look forward to more."
Mike was born in Stoke-on-Trent, and has lived in Bollington since 1966.
He was the First Mayor of Bollington, and first person to become Mayor of Bollington twice.
Aside his love of animals and volunteering, Mike first worked at a banker with Midland Bank.
At age 36, he decided to become a Student Nurse at Macclesfield's Parkside Hospital on Victoria Road, and worked there for 20 years until it closed in 1997.
He finished his career as a Call Centre Admin at Cheshire Building Society, and has fully-devoted himself to The Windyways in his retirement ever since.
He lives in The Happy Valley with his partner Yvonne Droy.
"My favourite thing about Macclesfield is the independent shops. I think we need a lot more independence in this town," he added.
