2000 people have already listened to Beautiful Psycho, the new single by Macclesfield rock band Queen Cult.
The femme-queer four-piece rock band boast their strongest track to date, with both musicianship and the production having been revved up a notch.
Queen Cult are a femme-queer fronted four-piece rock band based in Macclesfield, Cheshire formed by Macclesfield flatmates Maisie Johnson (vocals/guitar) and Leila Jacklin (bass).
Brodie Carson is on drums and Piers Jarvis plays rhythm guitar.
Beautiful Psycho continues to lyrically shake up the important issues that fill the underbelly of our modern society.
It is undeniably "Queen Cult" - unadulterated rock with pop sensibilities. It was produced by DECOY whose growing list of credits includes IDLES, Everything Everything and Gang of Four.
Queen Cult's own musical references include No Doubt, Paramore, Royal Blood and Nothing But Thieves.
The new track is three-and-a-half minutes long, and takes the listener through a variety of sonic landscapes.
Starting with a ska/pop beat that builds into a slow and steady storm of rock riffs, front woman Maisie Johnson tantalises us with her recognisable voice and demands attention as she contemplates being dragged into a hole of pervasive energies.
A dramatic pause just before the chorus, is met with welcoming, anthemic guitars, and cutting lyrics.
Maisie, who is an ex-Wet Led employee and Macclesfield self-employed guitar tutor said: "Initially just as a song demo, Beautiful Psycho has been around a moment for us.
"We decided to revisit it because it's always had a place, we were just waiting for when it would rear its horns at us and demand to be released! You could say maybe the song told us," she laughed.
Queen Cult already boast over 6,200 monthly listeners on Spotify alone, and the new track will take the band to the next level.
"It carries a whole tug and pull dynamic within the lyrics forever trying to hold a higher ground, whilst breathing in and out of control," Maisie added.
"We really wanted to show that contrast between the verses and chorus' by switching from a chirpy, poppier major verse and a darker heavier cry and lyrically questioning chorus.
"It can be about obsession, being drawn to a whole lot of wrong, toxic energies. Abuse. Passion. However deep YOU want to interpret it. To us, it also stamps the early sounds of Queen Cult and our roots of where it all began to where we are going. It means a lot."
2022 has been a busy year so far for Queen Cult. Their critically acclaimed debut EP, Woman That I Know, came out in January, consisting of four tracks that embody feminism and a desire for change.
The pandemic-penned EP was a transformative experience for Maisie and Leila, who were forced to see their reality within the confined walls of their Macclesfield flat, both unable to work their Macclesfield hospitality jobs.
Aside Macclesfield Nub News, Significant supporters of the band include BBC Introducing Stoke, five Spotify editorial playlists and YouTube Music's New Alternative playlist.
You may know the band from headlining Macclesfield in October charity music festival in 2021.
Very much a live focussed band, who have debuted in several UK cities across the first quarter of 2022, there are unconfirmed hopes of a Manchester gig this year for local fans.
Leila is also a bartender at Macclesfield music venue Mash Guru, so a future gig - while not confirmed - can never be ruled out!
They support The Menstrual Cramps in London in May and have various festival dates forthcoming, including being invited to perform at Rivfest in Warrington, in honour of the late band Viola Beach.
Their next closest gig to Macclesfield is Your City Festival in Stoke on June 2.
