Macclesfield boxer Karriss Artingstall will bring a bronze medal back to our town, as she put up a great fight to narrowly lose her Olympic semi-final today.

Karriss Artingstall, who is ranked 10th in the world, took on Sena Irie who is ranked 5th in the World.

The Japanese boxer just edged to victory on home soil, on the match that was shown on the BBC Red Button.

Irie took the first round unanimously, but Maxonian Karris took the second round on a 4-1 split.

This left things at 19 points a piece going into the final round.

But despite British commentators stating: "She's outworked her opponent" and "The momentum is with the women in red", Karriss just lost the he final round.

Irie won the last round of punches three points to two, and took the contest.

It will be an all-Asian affair in the final, as the other semi-final saw Irma Testa of Italy lose to Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines. The Italian will also take a bronze, with Karriss.

Sena Irie will face Nesthy Petecio in the final.

The 20-year-old Japanese fighter had already clinched Japan's 1st-ever Olympics medal in women's boxing, but now she can go one step further in the Gold Medal match.

Karriss, who is a gunner for the British army, had already made our town proud, and is delighted for her bronze achievement.

It is the third medal the Macclesfield 26-year-old has won in her short boxing career.

Macclesfield Nub News congratulates Karriss on her medal, which will be Britain's 11th bronze.

The UK are sixth in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics table, with 28 medals.
