A Macclesfield jeweller has announced their retirement.

Macclesfield jeweller Peter Clayton has confirmed Cheshire Diamonds will leave the high street in the year of its 45th anniversary.

Peter has been a jeweller since he was a teenager, then starting up his own business at aged 20.

But now Peter, who will turn 65 next June, is hanging up his tools to retire from the high street.

Macclesfield Nub News met with Peter for a chat.

"Cheshire Diamonds Limited will close after 44 years trading at the end of January 2025", said Peter.

Peter's business started in High Lane, then quickly moved to Macclesfield.

"I have never been so busy in my life since I told people I am no longer going to be on the high street.

"Beyond January, I will still be available for commissions and repairs via 07726 200036.

"I'm there for people who want me to be there, and I will still be online."

The Mill Street property will turn into accommodation.

Over the years, Cheshire Diamonds Limited has been based in multiple locations.

In 1983, he worked in a ginnel on Chestergate. He has been based at two properties on Mill Street, and in his current location since 2020.

Since starting, his business has survived ten prime ministers and five recessions.

He's flown to weddings with rings at the last minute, to going to meet clients around the world, but all roads proudly lead back to Macclesfield.

"I could write an anecdotal book probably, and I probably will do," he explained.

"I love my job still to this very day, when you learn a skill, you never really want to leave it.

"My wife says I will never stop making jewellery.

"But I think the time is right for me because I am 64, and I want to enjoy a bit of life."

"Everybody that has supported me from age 20 to now has been amazing," he revealed.

"It has been my reputation that has made people come back, and I have been very grateful that I have been recognised for a good service and building a reputation upon that.

"I'm one of the last of the working jewellers."

As well as thousands of locals, the traditional trader has done jewellery for celebrities and Members of the British Empire.

In recent years, he has done lots for charity too.

The business had wound down into a comfortable stage of semi-retirement in recent years, with Peter now working only Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm. Now, he will leave the high street but still be available to reach beyond the end of next January.

The jewellery designer can also clean, repair and value jewellery. He also buys gold.

There's five months left until their closure, so in the meantime you can make enquiries via 01625 425472.
