Macclesfield's magnificent World Book Day costumes 2026
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 5th Mar 2026
World Book Day never fails to deliver.
Children across the country have been heading into school dressed as their favourite book characters today (Thursday, March 5).
Here in Macclesfield, we saw literary icons such as the Cat in the Hat, Little Red Riding Hood, Matilda, and Mary Poppins.
There were also a few more contemporary choices, including one youngster who dressed as Macclesfield FC captain Paul Dawson, celebrating the Silkmen's 'fairytale' FA Cup journey.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO in 1995 with the aim of promoting a love for books and reading.
In the UK, World Book Day is a registered charity and is celebrated on the first Thursday in March.
Suzy Prince, owner of The Quiet Cat Bookshop in Macclesfield's Grosvenor Centre, said: "We really are believers in 'books from as young as possible'.
"Studies consistently show that there is always a positive benefit to children reading and having easy access to books.
"World book day is just so much fun, and we love to see the efforts made by children, their families and their schools to join in and show off their favourite characters from a book.
"Our own children are older teens now but we always loved planning their world book day outfits with them so much when they were younger children."
