Man allegedly shouted racist abuse at 10-year-old girl during Black Lives Matter protest
A mother has appealed for witnesses after a man allegedly screamed racist abuse at her 10-year-old daughter during the Black Lives Matter demonstration in Macclesfield town centre on Friday (5 June).
The mother, who has requested to remain anonymous, described how her daughter "looked like a rabbit in the headlights" as the man allegedly shouted racially motivated profanities at her.
She told Macclesfield Nub News what happened: "My friend and I had our kids with us to the protest; my daughter is 10 and her son is 14. We were right at the back, by the NatWest bank. The kneel went on for quite a while, so I said, 'let's go now, we've paid our respects'.
"We walked off and a couple of minutes after there was a round of applause and these two guys were shouting into the crowd, 'I don't know what you're doing this for'."
The mother was then talking to her friend as they were about to part ways when they were approached by the man, who was with another person. They were initially sitting on the black benches outside the town hall.
"My friend said if they come over don't make eye contact. She's Asian and he came up to her and said, 'you're a f***ing terrorist, why don't you go back to where you came from'," the woman told Nub News.
As they had the children with them, they didn't challenge the man and she described feeling "quite scared," adding, "we were two women on our own."
Following this, they went towards her friend's car, which was parked outside Pizza Express, when she says he "turned" on her 10-year-old daughter.
The mother, who herself is white, said: "She's dual heritage and he just called her a 'mixed-race c***'. He was absolutely shouting in her face. My daughter has an afro and he was saying, 'look at your hair you mixed-race c***'."
"I just went right, I'm off to the police now," she added.
The police took the woman's details at the station and are currently investigating the reported incident. They told Macclesfield Nub News that no arrests have been made.
The woman described the man as being in his mid-50s with white hair and a beard who was "scruffy looking". She thinks he was wearing dark trousers and a grey top at the time.
She said the man who was with him did not do anything during the alleged incident, which took place sometime between 6:15-6:25pm.
Asked how her daughter was, she replied: "She's fine now, but she wasn't at the time. She's never witnessed that before and she didn't really know what the word is. He was very aggressive and my daughter looked a bit like a rabbit in the headlights. I could tell she wasn't okay when we were in the police station."
The mother added: "I just wanted to make people aware that this is what happens, but I never would have thought it would happen to a child."
She described Macclesfield as being in a "protective bubble" with these kinds of issues as a predominantly white town and urged people not to be complacent about racism close to home.
