A man has died after falling from a bridge.

Cheshire Police have confirmed that a 56-year-old man has died after falling from a viaduct near Brookhouse Lane in Congleton.

It comes after officers received a concern for welfare report at around 5.30am on Friday morning (March 21).

A spokesperson for the force said: "At 5.28am this morning police received a report of concern for the welfare of a 56-year-old man in Congleton.

 "Police made a search of the area and located him on a viaduct near Brookhouse Lane.

"The man fell from the bridge and emergency services treated him at the scene, however he sadly died.

 "The incident has been referred to the IOPC in line with normal procedure."

Trains between Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent have been suspended as a result of this incident.

While the line has now reopened, Northern Rail have said disruption is expected to continue until midday.

The train operator's website states: "Following the emergency services dealing with an incident between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke-On-Trent all lines have now reopened.

"Train services running to and from these stations will be delayed.

"Services between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke-On-Trent are returning to normal after earlier disruption caused by the emergency services dealing with an incident has ended."
