Bosley Tug of War Club have become national indoor Tug of War Champions.

The Macclesfield parish sports club already won silverware in the regionals last month, and now they have won twice in the nationals.

In a weekend event held at the Tug of War Association National Tug of War Championships held in Bakewell.

Indoor tug of war is different to the more well-known outdoor version of the sport with competitions taking place on special tug of war matting.

Bosley are this year competing on the indoor tug of war circuit having last competed on the 2019 indoor tug of war circuit and winning the 560kg and 600kg titles from that year, and were looking to retain those titles in 2021 after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The club has this year been competing with a squad of 22 pullers, including 4 female pullers which has also enabled the club to compete in mixed competition this year where teams consist of 4 men and 4 women each.

The National Championships this year were held in seven weight classes, with Bosley taking part in all of them at 560kg, 600kg, 640kg, 680kg, 720kg and catchweight (where there is no weight limit) and also the mixed 580kg division (where teams compete with 4 men and 4 women.

At this year's National Indoor Tug of War Championships, Bosley missed out on medals in the 640kg, 680kg and 720kg competitions, but made up for the disappointment of missing out on the medals in those weight classes by winning the 560kg and 600kg divisions by defeating Uppertown from Derbyshire in both finals, and rounded off the day with a gold medal in the mixed 580kg competition after defeating Kilroe from Yorkshire in the final.

This was a bit of history for the club as it is the first time that the club has had ladies in the team winning Tug of War Association National Championship gold medals for Bosley. The club also came away with a silver medal in the catchweight competition, taking their medal haul to 4 on the day across all weight categories.

"These were great results for our club," said Bosley spokesman Alan Knott.

"We have recruited a number of new members this year, which was brilliant following the closure of sport and social activities during 2020, and it was great to have recruited a number of younger members too."

"We didn't really know what to expect going into this years indoor tug of war season, so to come away with three gold medals as well as the additional bonus of a silver medal is a remarkable achievement"

"It is great that we had ladies winning gold medals with us this year for the first time in our club's history, and after a long and successful history for our club going back to the 1950's that is long overdue!"

"Our 3 national gold medals this year have taken the number of senior national gold medals won by us up to 30, which adds to the 50 national titles we have won on the outdoor circuit, and in the next few years, it would be great if we could get up to 100 national titles across both the indoor and outdoor tug of war disciplines."

Now after smashing the regionals and nationals, 2022 is set up to be a huge year for the club.

"Subject to international events going ahead in the new year, we have now qualified to represent England at the British and Irish Championships which take place in Northern Ireland in January, where we will be up against other national teams from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland," Alan added.

"We have also qualified to represent England at the World Championships in the Netherlands in March, which will be a big step up for us, but it will be a great challenge against some of the other best indoor tug of war nations in the world at the present time."

"We are always looking for new members to join our club - as the sport is held in weight categories, the more members of any size that we have, the more competitions we can enter, so if anyone is interested in joining our club, then feel free to make contact with us."
