Got a big celebration in 2024?

Meet the new community florist in a Macclesfield parish.

Morven Dunn is the friendly face now behind Sutton Village Florist.

Situated next to Sutton General Stores, and upstairs from the coffee shop Sutton & Co, is Sutton Village Florist.

Macclesfield Nub News went to meet Morven to find out what the flower shop has to offer.

"We have brought in a completely different quality of flower and a completely different selection of flowers", said Morven.

Best sellers include £5-6 'get-up-and-go' posies, and the £45 mid-range bouquets. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

"A lot of people who come in will comment and say, I have never seen that flower or that is an unusual flower.

"We want to offer flowers that you can't find in a supermarket.

"The other thing we have introduced is - because we understand people's restrictions financially at the moment - we have introduced lots of smaller posie type pick-up-and-go bunches of flowers. And that is just a cheaper price point, not a cheaper flower."

With the new homes being built nearby, and an already buzzing village community, Morven took up the opportunity which she thinks has 'so much potential'. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

Before she became a florist, Morven worked in trauma therapy for young people and families.

She then had a vinyl record stall in Altrincham Market, the market hall by the same people that brought The Picturedrome to Macclesfield.

But it was the neighbouring floral store which piqued her interest in plants, and it spiralled from there into her eventually becoming a full-time florist.

The passion of running a business aside, Morven likes how flower arranging is good for mindfulness. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

"I just found that floristry awoken something in me," she recalled.

Morven really got going as a florist as COVID hit, which led to lots of people supporting supermarket flowers throughout the pandemic as they could stay open throughout.

But now Morven has took up the opportunity at Sutton Village Florist to provide a high-end community florist services.

"I love Macclesfield, I feel Macc itself has so much potential.

"Being Glaswegian, I am very down to earth, and the people in Macclesfield are very grounded which appeals to me as well.

"It feels like a place that could be on the turn, if it embraces some more independent businesses.

"And speaking more locally here in Sutton, I can see that it is not just about running the development of a florist. You are part of a wider community project, because you want the café to work, you want the Post Office to work, we have a space up here that we can use for workshops.

"Lots of people come here to meet someone for a coffee, and can pick some flowers up for them under the same roof."

Morven also uses her shop floor as a chance to shine a light on other independent businesses, as there is a gift shop full of wares from local giftmakers.

Those stocked include Macclesfield's Wildmoor Soap, The Happy Cow Chocolate Company, and Ashbourne's Peak District Candles.

The shop will be selling pre-packaged gift boxes ahead of Valentine's and Mother's Day, for which you can buy along with your flowers.

If you are a maker and want your products stocked here, why not get in touch?

"We always ensure there are freshly made flowers in-store to pick up, so you don't need to order", explained Morven.

"The other advantage we have because of the attachment to the shop, although we close at 4:30, people can buy flowers in Sutton until 7pm because there is a selection available in the Sutton General Stores veg shed.

"For us, we have got to provide quality consistently so people trust us. We like to say we can offer a freshness guarantee of five to seven days. But we have some customers coming in after two weeks saying that their flowers are still fresh.

They have recently introduced a loyalty scheme, where you can get 20% off your seventh purchase of £25 or over. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

"We see this very much as a local resource, we want to support the local community and hopefully get their support back. We are very invested in that.

"Thank you to the Macclesfield community for their support."
