A unique take on pilates is coming to a parish near Macclesfield.
Pregnancy is a magical time for many, but what if you could make it even more special, by treating your body to some physical activity, in an environment where you can make new friends?
Well, Macclesfield resident Beth Allcock thinks she has the answer.
The self-employed pilates tutor, of six years, will launch a new event offering a pregnancy-focused pilates class, which will also feature associated workshops.
The first workshop - to be held at Alderley Pilates - will be suitable for women who are in the prenatal period. And you do not have to have tried pilates before.
Just make sure you pre-book, and turn up to Alderley Pilates, in Nether Alderley, on Thursday September 12, to take part, and prepare yourself for a little bit of 'me-time'.
Macclesfield Nub News met with Beth, of PilatesbyBeth, to find out more.
"This workshop is a market I really wanted to tap into," she revealed.
"There wasn't much pre-natal pilates in the area, and that is one of my specialisms.
"It is really important to keep the body mobilised through pregnancy, get a bit more space in the body and help with any niggles.
"It is also a social thing. The pregnant ladies may find out they have the same midwives, or will be giving birth at the same hospital. Or they can get advice, on something which can be quite scary."
Pilates aims to improve physical strength, flexibility and posture, as well as boosting your mental health.
The subsequent socialisation that will come from this event, can also be good for you.
According to NHS England, 'you should be able to hold a conversation as you exercise during pregnancy'. So the relaxed pace of pilates could complement this.
Beth, who has osteoporosis, knows first hand how pilates can improve muscle mass and bone density.
"You lose that bone density throughout pregnancy. So pilates is a great way to stay healthy in the body," she said.
"That is where my tailored interest comes from.
"All you need to do is pre-book in advance, provide your emergency contact details, and show up."
You can book the upcoming workshop online via Eventbrite. Contact details have also been included above.
Equipment will be provided.
"It is a privilege to help out at this stage of life," she added.
"I want to really help people really, I think there is a real niche for it. I want to create a Pilates space where there is somewhere to go and practise movement, have a chat and enjoy the social and fitness aspect."
Local holistic wellness professional Melany Simpson will also be present to offer her services at the event.
According to YouGov, Pilates is the 34th most popular 'physical activity' in the UK', with 36% of survey respondents having a positive opinion of it. Pilates ranked above basketball and horse racing in this survey, and the popularity mind-body exercise continues to grow.
Beyond pregnancy pilates, Beth also offers Macclesfield pilates classes for people to attend.
From two new classes at the AstraZeneca gym (also on September 12), to mixed level classes at Carla Gilder Fitness on a Tuesday starting on September 17.
Following the September 12 pregnancy pilates event. Beth aims to hold a permanent monthly pregnancy workshop at Carla Gilder Fitness. Dates to be confirmed.
Beth can also be found teaching across pilates and yoga studios in Macc.
"Journalism and pilates studios are a lot more similar than you think, there's lots of useful communication skills," she also said.
"I love being part of the clients' story and helping them to know their body better, to understand it better and be armoured with techniques to do their practice at home.
"I always say the strength is knowing your own body, and once that mind body awareness clicks, I really think it is so inspiring.
Pilates was popularised in the 20th century by Joseph Pilates, after he started practicing in the First World War.
Beth is riding the wave of a trend. As according to IBISWorld data from September 2023, there are 4,702 Pilates & Yoga Studios businesses in the UK as of 2023, an increase of 2.5% from 2022.
