One month left for Tytherington residents to have their say on changes to ward boundaries
Tytherington's two councillors are knocking on doors, informing them about the potential boundary changes, and getting them to share their views on a new consultation.
The Local Government Boundary Commission is a national organisation which covers the electoral and boundary arrangements of councils.
Ward boundaries are reviewed regularly to make sure they are fair, deciding how many councillors an area should get, with the ward boundaries drawn on how many people live there. Lines are set to be redrawn across Cheshire East, with councillors in Tytherington ward on a public campaign to make residents aware of the changes.
Tytherington's identity as a place itself, next to Macclesfield, could become eroded with upcoming proposed changes to Tytherington ward. That is according to Tytherington Cheshire East Councillors David Edwardes and Emma Gilman.
"The boundaries have been debated three times by Cheshire East Council," said David, who has been both a Tytherington ward councillor for Macclesfield Town Council and Cheshire East Council.
"Broken Cross and Upton ward is proposed to be made made bigger, Bollinbrook [previously part of a ward with Tytherington] is set to go into Broken Cross and Upton."
"Tytherington is a place. It is not just the name of a ward, said Emma," who has spent her whole life in Tytherington.
"The people who live in Tytherington place, should be and must be represented, by the councillors from Tytherington the ward.
"So [with the proposed changes] if you live on Beech Farm Drive, while your address might be Tytherington, your councillor won't be. They will be the central Macclesfield councillor, that is bonkers."
"In an area that goes right over to South Park," added David.
"For me, the people who live in Tytherington place must be in Tytherington the ward," added Emma.
"This is not 'north west Macclesfield or some random name', 'Tytherington is a place with some very clear boundaries'."
But according to the proposed boundaries, streets such as Springwood Way in the Tytherington Business Ward, will now go into the Bollington & Rainow ward.
"Will this business park now be named Bollington Business Park," questioned David.
"All the properties east of Tytherington Lane and on the Springwood Estate will go to Bollington. We argued that The Silk Road should have been the clear boundary."
Cheshire East Council will still have 82 councillors, but places like Congleton has grown exponentially [in population, thanks to new build houses], so new boundaries are drawn, set to be in place by the 2027 Cheshire East Council elections.
The Local Government Boundary Commission describes the changes as 'the re-warding of Macclesfield town to better reflect community identities and interests.'
David and Emma want affected residents to be aware of the changes, especially for those who may not be part of Tytherington ward anymore, and not represented by them. Even though their address line will still say Tytherington.
"We are very local councillors. They will be dealing with councillors from Central, Broken Cross and Bollington," said David.
"As a lifelong resident of my ward, I know it like the back of my hand. And I face the same issues that all my residents face," explained Emma.
"If my representative on the council lived six miles away, how in the name of all things holy is he know about what is going on in Tytherington.
"I think it is really important that people are aware.
"Knowledge is power.
"People will still talk to Tytherington Councillor, when according to boundaries commission they cannot represent their views."
""We are reaching out to the residents of the present Tytherington ward, saying 'do you want this'," concluded David.
"We cannot accept in any circumstances of taking parts of Tytherington place, out of Tytherington the ward, because that is just preposterous," concluded Emma.
"You can't just draw a line through a place, and go, you are going to drop out of the place.
"Everybody is saying there is no point [filling in the consultation] because they don't listen.
"But it is not a Cheshire East Consultation It is a [Local Government] Boundaries Commission one.
"They place a great deal of weight on what the residents think.
The Local Government Boundary Commission is running the consultation on ward boundary changes until December 9 2024.

Professor Colin Mellors, chair of the commission, said: "We want people in Cheshire East to help us. We have drawn up proposals for new wards in Cheshire East.
"We want to make sure these new electoral arrangements reflect communities. We also want them to be easy to understand and convenient for local people.
"Residents and local organisations can help us do that. We would like them to let us know whether they agree with our proposals before we take final decisions.
"It's easy to get involved. Go to our website. Or you can email or write to us. Just tell us what you think and give us some details why you think that. It's really simple, so do get involved."
People can also give their views by email to: [email protected] or by post to: Review Officer (Cheshire East), LGBCE, 7th Floor, 3 Bunhill Row, London EC1Y 8YZ.
