A new owner is sought to take the lead on a new apartment and retail complex in Macclesfield.

The site of the former Old Kings Head pub on Chestergate has been put up for sale.

It comes more than two years after plans for a 45-apartment block with ground floor retail units was approved by Cheshire East Council.

Now, the site is being marketed as a 'development opportunity' by Hallams Property Consultants.

The listing states: "A unique opportunity to purchase a town centre building plot with full planning approval for a four-storey building to create 45 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

"The building plot also includes 410 sq m of ground floor retail space."

Plans for the site were approved back in 2023.

It was seen as a way of breathing new life into plot which had been left to fall into 'derelict collapse' over the past 20-plus years.

However, support for the proposals was far from unanimous.

Then councillor Ashley Farrall said at the time: "The design put in front of us is generic, uninspiring, lacks character and is completely out of sorts with the aims of the conservation area that it's in."
