Cheshire East Council has approved plans to install a slide down Macclesfield's 108 steps.

Environmental campaigners hope a slide down the historic steps will help shorten journey times and encourage people to ditch their cars when visiting the town centre.

Under the proposals, a tube slide will take people down from the top at Churchside down to Waters Green.

The group behind the unique initiative, Macc n Slide, told Nub News that they see this as part of the solution to diversify transport locally.

A spokesperson for the group said: "Macclesfield is in a unique position compared to most towns in that our town centre sits on top of quite a steep hill, so it only makes sense we take advantage of this.

"We've seen a push in recent years for more cycle lanes and the pedestrianisation of more areas to get people out of their cars and we believe this slide will play an important part of this infrastructure down a historic route in and out of our town centre."

He added: "Like Londoners, Maxonians will soon be able to travel on the tube."

Initial plans for water to be used on the slide on hot days were knocked back by council planners over fears of "dangerously high speeds".

Under the current timeline, residents can expect to be whizzing down the slide by the middle of the summer.
