Plans to create a Business Improvement District in Macclesfield have taken a step forward.

Macclesfield Town Council has approved a feasibility study to explore the creation of a BID in the town centre.

Tim Roca, MP for Macclesfield has welcomed this news, feeling such a move would help boost footfall and deliver 'real benefits' for businesses and the community.

He said: "I'm supportive of a BID which could be a game-changer for Macclesfield, building on the great work of the Town Council, empowering local businesses to lead investment in the town centre, increase footfall, and breathe new life into our high streets.

"It's an ambitious approach that has worked in other towns and cities and there's no reason why Macclesfield shouldn't be leading the way here in Cheshire.

"The feasibility study will help us understand what a BID could look like for Macclesfield and how we can ensure it delivers real benefits for businesses and the community. I will continue to work with all partners to make this a reality.

"There's real momentum building behind our shared vision for a vibrant and thriving town centre. This is an important step on that journey."

The government website defines a BID as an area in which a levy is charged on all eligible business rate payers in addition to the business rates bill.

This levy is used to develop projects which will benefit businesses in the local area.

Improvements may include, but are not limited to, extra safety and security, cleansing and environmental measures.

Mr Roca added: "Supporting the regeneration of Macclesfield town centre has always been a top priority for me as the local MP and I've helped to bring people together.

"Over the past year, I've worked closely with the Town Council, local businesses, community groups, and the Town Centre Regeneration Group to ensure that revitalising our high street remains at the top of the agenda."
