The 'probable cause' of the Macclesfield Forest fire has been revealed.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service shared a further update on the wildfire at 10.20pm on Tuesday, July 21.

Crews continue to tackle the blaze, with it believed to have been caused by a discarded disposable barbecue.

A spokesperson for the service said: "Firefighters will remain in attendance at Macclesfield Forest overnight, with relief crews being brought in to continue tackling the fire.

"A fire investigation has been carried out and the most probable cause has been identified as a discarded disposable barbecue found in the area.

"This incident is a reminder of the devastating impact that careless behaviour can have on our countryside, particularly during periods of warm, dry weather.

"We will bring you further updates tomorrow morning."

Sergeant Rob Simpson of Cheshire Police's rural crime team said: "We've been supporting the movement of fire officers in our 4x4 and visited the scene with the fire investigator.

"We've also had to deal with numerous people approaching the location, blocking vital access roads, or walking and mountain biking through the area near to the fire.

"People may want to familiarise themselves with how quickly a wildfire can spread!

"We are grateful to those of you who have already spoken to us with information about the incident.

"We would be keen to hear from anyone else who may be able to add anything further as we look to progress the investigation."
