The public have been warned not to start campfires following an incident at Macclesfield Golf Club.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were recently called to the golf course off Hollins Road following reports of a fire in the open.

While the flames were quickly extinguished on this occasion, the incident does serve as an important reminder of the dangers of starting campfires.

A CFRS spokesperson said: "With temperatures remaining high and conditions staying dry, even a small fire can spread quickly, cause significant damage, and put homes, wildlife, and local communities at risk, while also tying up emergency resources needed elsewhere.

"Please help protect our countryside by avoiding campfires and portable barbecues in open spaces, taking your litter home, and disposing of smoking materials responsibly."

A spokesperson for Macclesfield Golf Club said: "We'd like to say a huge thank you to all of the emergency services who responded quickly and professionally to bring the situation under control. Your dedication and hard work are greatly appreciated.

"This incident also serves as an important reminder of the dangers of lighting fires, particularly during periods of dry weather. What may seem like a small or controlled fire can spread rapidly, putting people, wildlife, property and emergency responders at risk.

"Please think twice before lighting campfires, disposable barbecues or any open flames, and always dispose of smoking materials safely.
