Snow has caused chaos on the roads in Macclesfield.

Residents woke up to a blanket of snow this morning, January 6.

This has unfortunately caused some major issues on the roads, with Cheshire Police urging people to stay home if possible.

"Please do not drive unless absolutely necessary the road conditions are treacherous," said a spokesperson for the force.

Police say they have received reports of vehicles struggling on the Silk Road and Hibel Road.

As such, motorists are advised to use another route.

Meanwhile the A54 and A537 are once again closed due to the road conditions.

Sergeant Rob Simpson said: "We're already out this morning checking on our rural communities and sadly finding people who have navigated around signs that were put out to keep them safe.

"It's pretty tricky going on the low lying roads but up on the A54 and A537 (Which are closed) it's quite a challenge.

"My team are on duty and will help where we can,

"Stay safe everyone."

A spokesperson added: "Due to the weather and for safety reasons, Grosvenor multi-storey car park in Macclesfield is currently closed.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Other nearby car parks remain open.

"The car park will reopen once it is safe to do so."

The council has also confirmed that bin collections will be affected.

"Due to the weather conditions, bin collections across Cheshire East will be affected today and we may not be able to complete all our rounds as usual - especially in areas that have seen heavy snowfall overnight," the spokesperson said.

"If we can't get to you, we'll do our best to return as soon as we can.

"Thank you for your patience.

"Please keep an eye out on our social media accounts for further updates."
