A Macclesfield schoolgirl has donated her hair to charity.

Sophia Mann has had 12 inches of her hair chopped off for the Little Princess Trust.

The six-year-old's locks will be used to make wigs for children who have lost their own hair to cancer.

Janine Hamlett, Sophia's mum, said: "We are so proud of her.

"She is amazing, to be doing this at such a young age.

"My dad had cancer in his 30s and again in his 50s, when he sadly passed away, so cancer charities have always been very close to my heart.

"Normally we would do things for Cancer Research or Macmillan, but it is really nice to be able to do something for children affected by cancer.

"Especially that my child is doing something for another child who is not as lucky as she is."

Sophia, a pupil at Ivy Bank Primary School, went to Roe 11 for the haircut on Saturday, July 26.

As each wig costs £700 to make, Janine decided to set up a JustGiving page to help cover the cost.

At the time of writing, £960 has been donated to the cause.

Janine, 46, added: "Sophia has been amazed that she has been able to raise so much money for the charity.

"I don't think she was nervous at all until she came to be in the chair but the hairdresser was lovely and made her feel at ease!

"Sophia takes most things in her stride and just seemed to be pleased that everyone thought she was doing such a good thing."

Asked if Sophia has thought about her next charity fundraiser, Janine said: "Not yet! I think she has been overwhelmed with the support and attention this has brought her from family and friends.

"So, I think she's happy to be out of the limelight for a while now!"
