Five films shot in Macclesfield

By Alex Greensmith 12th Jan 2022

Have you ever wondered if there are any films shot in Macclesfield?

Well wonder no more, as here are five flicks fully or partially set or recorded in our town.

1. So Well Remembered

The earliest entry on the list, Hibel Road and Windmill Street were among the locations in 1947's So Well Remembered. Exterior shots established the working class nature of the film, which recalled the two World Wars from the perspective of a quaint mill town. Macclesfield chosen as it was famously the only Mill Town left unbombed in the Second World War, which ended just two years before the release of the film. While set in a fictionalised Lancashire place, the crew of the film didn't want to hide the fact it was shot in Macc, as the first screening was in the Majestic Theatre in Macclesfield on 9 August 1947. Hundreds of locals were cast as extras, and given mementos from the shoot. The film based off've a 1945 novel of the same name stars the late John Mills, Martha Scott, and Trevor Howard. Ironically given the title of the production, the film became lost media for 59 years, and was only rediscovered thanks to another Macclesfield arts legend in 2006. Trawling through old reels in Tennessee, USA of all places, Muttley McLad, singer-songwriter and bassist of of the band The Macc Lads, retrieved the vintage movie. However, the Edward Dmytryk-directed film is yet to be digitised and can only be viewed by buying a DVD. 2. Control

Another film in black-and-white, but this time by choice, Control is the highest-grossing film on the list.

The Joy Division biopic centring on King's School graduate Ian Curtis, made $8.9 million at the box office in 2007.

Directed by a photographer who knew the band, filming took place in Macclesfield on July 11 and July 12 2006.

Sam Riley played Ian Curtis and Samantha Morton played his wife Deborah, who wed in our town in 1975.

Some shots were filmed outside Macclesfield's Barton Street, as well as some establishing shots in our town.

Other shots were filmed in Manchester and Nottingham, the latter of which was the hometown of actress Samantha Morton.

The Guardian journalist John Harris said the film 'manages to make Macclesfield look ever-so-slightly mythic'.

The film ends in 77 Barton Street, where council worker and lead singer Ian Curtis committed on 18 May 1980, aged just 1980.

The film is free to watch on Amazon Prime, or can be digitally rented from just £2.49.

Or you can spend a little more for a physical copy.

3. The Rochdale Pioneers

Another Lancashire film which took inspiration from Macc, The Rochdale Pioneers released in 2012. The Co-operative Group commissioned the film to tell the story of the co-operative movement, when it started in 1844. Given the nature of the film, it wasn't released to make a profit, rather for the message of the 57 minute film. The working class heroes in the movie had a scene at Paradise Mill in Macclesfield. The Park Lane museum is a popular one for production crews. The film isn't on streaming, but can be bought here. 4. 1599 - A True Story of the Elizabethan Court The most recent entry on the list 1599 - A True Story of the Elizabethan Court released in 2016. It follows two twins in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. A unique film in the fact profits went to local charities, the film substituted Elizabethan-era Salford for Gawsworth. Grade I-listed building Gawsworth Old Hall of Church Lane was featured in prominent scenes of the film starring Christopher Eccleston and Clare McGlinn. Sherlock Holmes had previously filmed at Gawsworth Old Hall in 1993. Buy the film here. 5. Gunpowder The most amateur film on the list, but still an entertaining watch, indie film Gunpowder released in 1986. The slightly cheesy moving picture manages the incredible feat of making Macclesfield look like the South of France. The action flick uses Armoury Towers as an evil genius base, infiltrated by two spies. Fitting, given the 1858 building was a former military institution. The war office appears in the first ten minutes of the film, whereas other outdoor countryside action sequences were shot around Macclesfield and Nether Alderley. Armoury Towers is located at Macclesfield's 2 Shrigley Rise. The film gained a cult following in West Germany and the Netherlands. You can watch it here. Buy a DVD for £7.99 here.
