The first Treacle Market of the year is back. And we have teamed up with their organiser Jane Munro, to share 10 exclusive facts about the iconic Macclesfield event.

  1. The Treacle Market Started as a handful of stalls in July 2010 at two original sites - Waters Green carpark and Market Place. There had been a successful Farmers market in Waters Green at Barnaby festival the month before, which led to the inception of the event we all know and love.
  1. The Treacle Market had around 150 stalls, offering an enticing mix of exceptional food, drink, craft and vintage finds. Unfortunately, the pandemic has reduced the amount of stalls for customer safety for this weekend's event, but it is hoped a full capacity can be held later in 2021.
  1. Traditionally, the Treacle Market takes place last Sunday of the month, except December when it falls on a Sunday before Christmas.
  1. The Treacle Market welcomes dogs with well-behaved owners. Hosts the Treacle Hound Dog Show each year organised by and in aid of Erin Hounds. Famous previous judges from the Dog Show include Bill Turnbull from BBC Breakfast and Classic FM. Other judges have been Macc auctioneer Adam Partridge and Macclesfield FC manager Danny Whitaker
  1. While the Macc event could not celebrate their 10th birthday in person, due to the pandemic, instead opting for a virtual event. A milestone event was held the year before. The 100th Treacle was in November 2019.
  1. The Treacle Market enjoys hosting ferret racing, once each year, usually in the summer. The furry frenzy is organised by Runcorn company Fuzz the Ferret.
  1. The organisers and stalls encourage people to use a Treacle tote bag if they haven't brought their own shoppers. Using sustainable 'alternatives', as opposed to plastic bags.
  1. The event enjoys raucous traditional jazz tunes from brilliant local band Annie's Saints and Sinners each month
  1. The name is taken from the centuries old accident when a horse drawn wagon overturned, spilling its cargo of treacle onto the cobbles. Vendors will sell treacle toffee and treacle pudding to honour this legacy.
  1. 25% of Macclesfield's population like the Treacle Market page on Facebook. 13,089 people like the lively and friendly event which attracts shoppers from outside our town.
