The last Treacle Market of the year has been cancelled.

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office, with gusts of up to 56mph expected in Macclesfield.

As a result of this, organisers of the Treacle Market have made the 'difficult decision' to cancel this month's event.

A post on the Treacle Market Facebook page read: "Unfortunately, due to yellow weather warnings, we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel tomorrow's Treacle Market.

"We've exhausted all possibilities of varying options to continue, but ultimately, it cannot be done.

"Safety is our top priority and together with ANSA who put up the stalls, we decided we just cannot continue with the weather warnings in place.

"Please continue to support local businesses in town as they also take the hit of a cancellation, and share some love with our wonderful traders."

A yellow weather warning covering large parts of the country is in place for much of Sunday, December 22.

The Met Office says to expect strong winds, likely causing some disruptiot.

"Strong and gusty northwesterly winds are expected to develop on Sunday," the national weather service's website reads.

"Gusts of 50-60 mph are expected quite widely, and around some exposed coasts and hills of gusts 70 mph are possible, especially in the north and west.

"In addition, squally showers are likely with some hail and thunder possible in places.

"This has the potential to cause delays to public transport and some disruption to the road network, which may have a greater than usual impact given the busier pre-Christmas weekend travel."
