A gym has reopened following a major refurbishment.

Everybody Health & Leisure celebrated the opening of its new-look gym at Macclesfield Leisure Centre with a VIP event.

On Tuesday (December 17) a select group of people including stakeholders and members were invited for an exclusive sneak peek inside the fitness space, which has been upgraded with new Technogym equipment, Biocircuit machines and a refurbished cycle studio.

Among the visitors was local resident Terry Jaques, who said: "My initial thoughts of the gym are really good, it has a great range of Technogym equipment.

"I'm 75 now and come three to four times a week, it gets you out and you feel better afterwards for staying active."

Over £500,000 has been spent on the gym's refurbishment.

It forms part of a wider investment package that Everybody Health & Leisure and Cheshire East Council has committed to in Macclesfield.

They are also preparing to open a dual-purpose facility in the town centre, offering personal training, limited gym access and the delivery of public health programmes through the recently-won One You contract.

Everybody Health & Leisure also recently took over the café in West Park.

Thomas Barton, CEO of Everybody Health & Leisure, added: "It is with great pride that we open this new gym at the leisure centre in Macclesfield.

"We are committed to investing our time and expertise into providing the very best facilities to our members and the residents of the borough.

"This high spec space in Macclesfield is proof of what can be achieved with the right planning and the right funding, and we feel that we have created something here that we can offer our members that could rival commercial gyms with much higher price points."

Councillor Liz Braithwaite, vice chair of Cheshire East Council's environment and communities committee, added: "The council is committed to investing in its leisure centres so that we can continue to offer our residents modern and well-equipped facilities that support their health and wellbeing.

"These improvements at Macclesfield Leisure Centre are part of a wider package of 'invest to save' works agreed by the council as part of the approved outcomes of its recent Strategic Leisure Review.

"The investment is targeted at sites where service demand is greatest.

"I look forward to further investment being made at other sites across the borough in the coming months."

Further improvement works are planned at Macclesfield Leisure Centre, including upgrades to the gym changing rooms and ground floor changing rooms.

This is expected to be complete by February, 2025.
