Macclesfield: 'Disgusting' untreated sewage on Kendal Road disrupts families
Long-suffering residents of Kendal Road have raw sewage in their streets for the sixth time in three years.
Six properties on 72-80 Kendal Road regularly have puddles of raw sewage leaking onto their doorsteps.
The latest breach, reported at 6:15am on Wednesday morning, worsened on Wednesday night with last night's rainy weather.
You can watch a video of this at the top of this article.
United Utilities allegedly told residents that the incident was a non-emergency, and would not be dealt with until Monday. Despite raw sewage posing a danger to public health.
"My message to United Utilities would be: would you like to live with faeces floating in front of your own front door?" Questioned one anonymous resident.
"I've had to close all my windows. It's like I'm living like a prisoner. You open the door and you get greeted with the stench," the resident added.
"We can't walk through it. It sticks to your shoes and your house will be stinking of it.
"I even told them that I have a vulnerable child living here. If I had to ring an ambulance, they wouldn't want to step through this.
"It is disgusting it needs dealing with and the sooner the better."
Another person living on the affected road had concerns for the children that like to play on the polluted ground.
"There's a lot of kids that live along here, they like to go out and play," they said.
"But if it isn't sorted soon they can't go out and play with their friends this half-term.
"I don't think anyone should have to live with raw sewage coming past their house."
Another anonymous occupier of the affected properties said "There's an old couple who lives here who I feel very sorry for, because it [the raw sewage] goes into their garden."
Following our chat with residents, United Utilities came to clear the blockage at 17:30pm. 36 hours after the latest breach was reported.
After this, a United Utilities spokesperson, said: "We have visited Kendal Road to clean up the sewer flooding that happened earlier this week."
"The issue was caused by a build-up of wipes that residents had been flushing down their loos. We have now successfully cleared the blockage from the sewer.
"Things like wipes don't just disappear down the u-bend and dissolve - they clump together and cause havoc in the sewers.
"We'd like people to think before they flush and remind them that only the three Ps should be go down the loo – pee, poo and (toilet) paper.
"By following this advice we can reduce the risk of blockages like this occurring."
Macclesfield West and Ivy Cllr Nick Mannion was contacted by residents on Wednesday, who then got in touch with the private wastewater company to push them into action.
"It is totally unacceptable that residents have had to suffer three days of raw sewerage swilling past their front door, effectively trapping them in their homes," he said.
"UU need to recognise their responsibilities to local residents who have no choice about who provides this vital service. Clearly more resources are needed to avoid the unacceptable delay in dealing with such potentially hazardous untreated waste."
Ironically, one of the residents' water rates are due next week, when the incident was originally said to be fixed.
Near the Weston and Ivy Meade, Kendal Road is a family neighbourhood, and home to the putrid puddle.
