A council van was damaged by a pothole during a safety inspection.

An emergency road closure is currently in place on Coalpit Lane in Langley.

This comes after a Cheshire East Council van was damaged while carrying out a routine inspection.

A spokesperson for the council said: "A highways officer recently attended Coalpit Lane to carry out a scheduled safety inspection, which is done three times per year.

"During this inspection, the staff member moved his vehicle to the edge of the road to let another vehicle pass.

"Unfortunately, the edge of the road had deteriorated and was submerged due to flooding.

"This defect would have been picked up as part of the scheduled inspection and is the result of winter weather – potholes are worse when there's heavy rain, followed by freezing temperatures.

"The highways van suffered some cosmetic damage."

While the council vehicle was stopped on the roadside, another van became stuck as it tried to pass by.

"The road has since been closed under an emergency closure, with repairs scheduled and an investigation underway to address the flooding," the council spokesperson added.

"We are working to resolve these issues promptly."
