Bollington squash club calls for community support as courts face closure
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 9th Jun 2026
Squash players are on a mission to save their sport.
Bollington Health & Leisure have reportedly decided to get rid of the centre's two squash courts, with a closure planned for September 30.
It is understood the space will be repurposed, with rumours on social media suggesting it may be turned into a climbing facility.
In response, Bollington Squash Club has called on the local community to make their voices heard with the aim of getting Bollington Health & Leisure, a registered charity, to reverse their decision.
A letter shared by the club on Tuesday, June 9, reads: "This decision has come as a shock to many members, players, parents and local residents.
"It is not simply an issue affecting a small number of squash enthusiasts. The proposed closure would result in the loss of a long-established community sports facility that has served Bollington and the surrounding area for nearly 50 years."
The letter continues, explaining that the squash courts support five teams competing across the North West Counties Squash League and North West Women's Squash League.
More than 30 juniors currently attend coaching sessions, with the courts also used by many social and recreational players.

One of Bollington Squash Club's main concerns is the lack of consultation before the decision was made.
"Many users, coaches, parents and stakeholders were unaware that closure was being considered and were not given an opportunity to contribute ideas, explore alternatives or discuss potential solutions before the decision was reached," the letter adds.
"There are also concerns that the full value of squash to the leisure centre and wider community has not been properly assessed and recognised.
"Importantly, Bollington Health & Leisure operates as a registered charity whose charitable objects specifically reference the provision and maintenance of squash for the benefit of the local community.
"Many users therefore believe that all reasonable alternatives should be fully explored before a permanent closure is implemented."
The letter continues: "We recognise the challenges faced by leisure facilities and appreciate the responsibilities of the board of trustees.
"However, we believe there is a strong case for greater transparency, meaningful consultation and a genuine exploration of alternative options before an important community asset is lost forever."
Over the coming weeks, Bollington Squash Club is planning to gather evidence, community feedback and ideas to demonstrate the value of squash within the local area and to develop potential solutions that could secure its future.
The letter ends: "We encourage all current and former players, parents, local residents, schools and supporters of community sport to engage with the process, share their experiences and help ensure that the voice of the community is heard.
"Together, we hope to show that squash remains an important part of Bollington's sporting heritage and has a valuable role to play in its future. Now more than ever sport is a vital part of community health. Far beyond physical fitness, it supports mental health, community engagement and quality of life for many individuals."
Bollington Health & Leisure has been approached for comment.
