A former footballer for Macclesfield Town has landed one of the biggest jobs in English football.

Graham Potter has been appointed manager of Chelsea, following the dismissal of manager Thomas Tuchel.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager ended his playing days with The Silkmen.

The Solihull-born left-back joined Macclesfield Town in early 2004 on a free transfer, and would play a pivotal part in Brian Horton's side that almost got promoted from League Two, but he would not play in the play-off semi-final loss to Lincoln City.

Across his two seasons with The Silkmen, the defender would make the 64 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals, an impressive total for a full-back.

He hung up his boots in our town aged just 30, leaving the Moss Rose to later pursue a career in coaching that has now landed him at Stamford Bridge.

Potter, now 47, had this to say about his new job on his employer's website.

"I am incredibly proud and excited to represent Chelsea FC, this fantastic football club," he said.

"I am very excited to partner with Chelsea's new ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and to develop a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of.

"I would also like to place my sincere thanks to Brighton & Hove Albion for allowing me this opportunity and in particular Tony Bloom and all the players, staff and supporters for their continued support during my time at the club."

Potter joined Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion as manager in May 2019. He managed 135 games for them, winning 31.1% of matches.

He will hope to better that record for the stronger team in Chelsea Football Club.

The former defender is the second ex-Macclesfield Town player to manager in the Premier League, following ex-Silkmen footballer and manager Paul Ince's ill-fated spell at Blackburn Rovers in 2008.
