Macclesfield Golf Club has raised an incredible amount of two charities which serve Macclesfield.

Each season, two members are captains of the golf and country club.

As part of their duties, they select charities and drum up funds that the club donates to good causes around this time each year.

Neil Drummond, Captain, Macclesfield Golf Club, 2023 selected to raise money for Just Drop In, the Brook Street youth wellness charity.

Fran Wilbraham, Lady Captain, Macclesfield Golf Club, 2023, opted for My Cheshire Without Abuse, who have a charity shop on Jordangate.

Both captains have presented each charity with an astounding £4560 each for the pair of charities.

"We were very keen to support small local community charities," said Fran and Neil,

"Especially those who were working with people (of all ages) who had not had a good start in life for one reason and another to help them to find their feet and integrate back into the community/society.

The charity provides vital support to those affected by domestic violence.

"We each visited and spoke with our first choice charities and were so impressed with their professionalism and organisation that we confirmed them as out charities for 2023"

Charity money was raised in many different ways throughout the year.

The main day for raising charity cash was the Captains' Charity Day held on Saturday June 23, funds were raised through hole sponsorships, the auction of prizes kindly donated by members of the golf club and other fundraising initiatives such as putting competitions, a raffle, guessing the number of tee pegs in a jar.

At Christmas, six large Christmas hampers - all items donated by members of the golf club - were raffled off.

Cheshire Without Abuse recently reopened their charity shop in central Macclesfield.

The Captain, Lady Captain and President's parking spaces, situated close to the club house were also auctioned for use on certain days of the week for the year, to raise money for these two local charities.

And it isn't just golf that led to money being raised. Both Fran and Neil also took part in last May's Macclesfield Bikeathon.

Smaller events held throughout the year also had element of charity raising like coffee mornings and tombolas.

When asked why is it important for sports clubs to raise money for charity, the outgoing captains had this to say.

Fran and Neil added: "We strongly believe that it is important that we, as a local golf club, support our local community in any way that we can, especially now when times are hard and purse strings tight – not an easy time currently for charities both locally and nationally with increasing costs and dwindling resources."

"Raising money for charity is something that we have been conducting at Macclesfield Golf Club ever since we can remember.

"We are extremely grateful to all the members of Macclesfield Golf Club who have; given their time and energy to support all the fundraising activities and initiatives, donated prizes for the auctions, raffle prizes, items for the Christmas hampers, and so generously given their money at charity events held throughout the year.

For the next 11 months, Clive Howlett, Captain, Macclesfield Golf Club, 2024 has chosen the Macclesfield charity ROAR (Reach Out and Recover).

Meanwhile, Gill Evans, the new Lady Captain of Macclesfield Golf Club, 2024 has chosen the Alzheimer's Society.

Fran and Neil also said: "We would like to make your readers aware that we have an excellent, challenging and picturesque 18 hole golf course located on the Hollins, at the top right of Windmill Street, Macclesfield, SK11 7EA."

"We also have a fantastic clubhouse that is available for hire at very competitive rates for the hosting of a wide variety of functions and events such as weddings, birthdays, christenings, engagements, celebrations, wakes, as well as a venue for holding golf club social events where members of the general public are cordially invited."
