A charity football game took place on June 8 at the Leasing.com Stadium between Macclesfield legends and Macclesfield supporters.

The match was in support of Mentell, a UK charity, which has a weekly meeting in Macclesfield.

The organisers had a donation goal of £1000 on their JustGiving page and since the game the total has risen to an impressive £3165.

One of the organisers, Andrew Hughes, explained how this generous donation will be used by the charity and why it's so important.

"The money will be used to facilitate and raise awareness in the Macclesfield area," explained Andrew.

"Mentell provides free, safe and confidential spaces for men aged 18+ to talk, free from advice, commitment and judgement.

"Football has always been an important part of my life and my community.

"The idea of using football to support a cause as vital as men's mental health seemed like a perfect fit."

Macclesfield FC Supporters Club (Andrew Hughes, Curtis Brooks, Duncan Hodges, John Spinks, James Wilson) organised the event to help promote Mentell Macclesfield and support provision of men's mental health support in Macclesfield. The event ended in a 5-2 win to the Macclesfield Town Legends.

Man of the match for the game was legends player, Danny Adams, who played for Macclesfield Town FC between 2000 and 2004 with an impressive 148 appearances for the Silkmen during his career.

Around 300 were in attendance and Andrew was appreciative of everyone's support.

"A massive thank you to everyone that donated or attended the charity match on Saturday evening," said Andrew.

"Big thanks to Bob Trafford, Andy Worth, John Spinks, Duncan Hodges, and James Wilson for helping to organise a great event and Darren Tinson for getting the legends team together."

The organisers hope to replicate the occasion next year but there is no set date yet.

Mentell host a male mental health support group every Thursday evening, at The Big Room CIC on Pickford Street.

"We'd like to say a big thank you for an incredible amount fundraised," said Jo Mellor, Community Manager at Mentell.

"All of that money raised will go to our Macclesfield Community champion, which will go towards a year's payment for our presence in Macclesfield.

"We know if you put feet on the ground like our community, men are more six more times likely to attend our groups."

To find more about Mentell, head to their website, or visit your local pub in Macclesfield, as Mentell boast print materials in 33 pubs in the town.
