Macclesfield Central councillor Ashley Farrall has condemned tax strategy from Rishi Sunak's budget last week.

OPINION: Just weeks after the Government raised National Insurance contributions for millions of working people across the country, they've now delivered a £5 billion Council Tax bombshell that will cripple households across the country.

Hidden away in the Chancellor's Budget documents is the proposal that there will be a 2% rise in Council tax PLUS an additional 1% rise in the Social Care precept – taking the overall rise to 3%.

It was surreal listening to Conservative councillors clamour to criticise the proposed budget seemingly unable to join the dots between their administration's budget black holes and the austerity policies that their national party has implemented over the past decade which has decimated funding for local councils and our services.

Then decrying Rishi Sunak's rise in council tax, which none of us want to do but is effectively forced on Councils by the chancellor's December economic statement.

On 12 October, the prime minister announced that Cheshire East, among other areas such as Cheshire West & Chester, Warrington and Greater Manchester, were to be placed under 'Tier 2' restrictions. The full extent of what these new measures mean is, as of yet, relatively unclear.

Cheshire East Council effectively know exactly the same as everyone else. All we know at this stage is what the PM has publicly announced.
