A majestic Macclesfield stately home that has been owned by the same family for 700 years has spent the past six months on the market.

The Adlington Hall Estate in Adlington has been owned by the Legh family since King Henry III passed it onto the family in 1315.

In late September 2022, it entered the sale market for the first-time ever. Since then, the price has not dropped: from a whopping £30 million.

Camilla Legh, 62, who currently owns the house, is the 25th Legh in succession, and if the house was staying in the family, it would be passed down to her son Thomas.

The Grade I Listed house is now up for sale for the first time ever, with an asking price of £30 million.

The house has a staggering ten bedrooms, six bathrooms, a historic chapel and two driveways, it is also believed a moat used to surround the house.

Alongside the stately home, the lucky buyer will also purchase six farms, 21 other houses, an events space, a village hall and a total of 1,922 acres of land.

The house has Tudor style exterior towards the east of the property, while the south of the property has Georgian style exterior.

The mortgage on the house would be around a staggering £140, 000 a month, but the sellers are letting up to 25 prospective buyers each purchase a bit of the estate.

The great hall and hunting lodge in the house are nowadays available to hire out for weddings, and the house was once featured on TV show Sherlock Holmes.

Mark Wiggin, who owns Mark Wiggin Estate Agents, has described the estate as 'remarkable' and hopes they can find someone 'who appreciates the history.'

He said: "It is not often you can say a house/estate has not been for sale for over 700 years.

"That in itself shows how remarkable Adlington is.

"We all hope that we can find somebody who appreciates the history and the opportunities the estate has and continues to offer."

Alex Lawson Savills head of rural agency said: "The Adlington Hall Estate has a rich and varied history and the estate has evolved over time.

"Today, many traditional elements that are synonymous with an estate of this importance are complemented by diverse income sources, the most recent being its commitment to providing habitat enhancements for local development."
