Expressive Portraits - Drawing Skills Workshop

Saturday 23rd May 2026

This will be a fun, informative and supportive drawing day exploring how structure and freedom can work together. Working from a professional model (in person, not a photograph) we'll look at:

  • The essential foundations of head anatomy
  • Measuring techniques (and when to let go of them)
  • Tonal expression
  • Expressive mark-making full of character and energy rather than achieving a purely realistic likeness
  • Explore different ways of working to find what works for you.
  • Using monochrome materials - pencil, charcoal and white chalk on coloured paper.

You'll learn the rules and how not to be ruled by them.

Through live demonstrations, plenty of drawing time, and tailored one-to-one guidance, you'll develop a clear starting process you can return to. The aim isn't to copy a formula, but to help you find your way of working.

This workshop is especially helpful if you:

  • Feel you've missed key foundations in drawing
  • Draw regularly but lack confidence with portraits
  • Want to loosen up your mark-making
  • Are a complete beginner looking for a supportive place to start

All materials provided.

Arrival The session is from 10:30am - 4:30pm. Please arrive around 10 minutes before the start time so you can be buzzed in, settle yourself, and get set up ready to begin at the start time.

The session will take place at The Wellbeing Space, a light, calm studio in a beautifully converted mill. The room is airy and thoughtfully designed, with plants, soft lighting, and a variety of seating options.

  • this is a shoes-off space, so feel free to bring warm socks.

  • Materials - A range of drawing materials will be available to use during the class. These are loaned for the session and must be returned at the end. Your drawings, of course, are yours to keep. You are welcome to bring your own too. Please see the FAQs for more information about what you can and can't use.
