SciBar is science in a bar - an invited speaker gives a talk on a scientific topic while people enjoy a drink or meal, with a Q&A afterwards. Bollington SciBar takes place at the Cock and Pheasant in Bollington.
The speaker in May is Erin Pallott. Erin has always had an interest in all things gross science. After a childhood of digging for bugs and begging to stay up late to watch grisly medical shows, she was eventually led to a PhD in immunology. During her 4 years of researching mucus responses against parasites, she became heavily involved in bringing science to the public, uncovering a true passion for bringing mucus to the masses. Erin now works as a Science Communication Officer at The University of Manchester, helping researchers improve their communication skills and get ideas for how to make their research fun.
Mucus is a physical defence barrier that evolved hundreds of millions of years ago — an essential development to evolve many organs. In barrier research, mucus is often dismissed as a simple slime. My research looks at one of the most common infections in the world: intestinal parasitic worms. While digging into how these nasty creatures tick, we have learned that our mucus layers are far from passive. Let's deep dive into our slime and learn just how much it does for our health.
No charge, all welcome. Arrive early to be sure of getting a seat.
