SciBar is science in a bar - an invited speaker gives a talk on a scientific topic while people enjoy a drink or meal, with a Q&A afterwards. Bollington SciBar takes place at the Vale Inn in Bollington.
Topic for September: What's in a name - how errors in clinical publications contribute to a genetic medicine diagnostic odyssey and how can we change it?
The speaker is Dr Peter Freeman. Peter is a lecturer in Healthcare Sciences (Clinical Bioinformatics, Genomics) at the University of Manchester. His primary teaching role is within the NHS Scientist Training Programme where he trains the next generations of NHS Healthcare Scientists in key technical disciplines (Software Engineering and Diagnostic Genome Sequencing). His research and the research software he develops and maintains (VariantValidator) are closely aligned with efforts to improve the quality of genetics data in clinical reports, literature, and diagnostic databases. As a member of working groups within key globally leading quality standards organisations (Human Genome Organisation and American College for Medical Genetics) he and his research are at the forefront of policy development which aims to improve patient outcomes by making published diagnostic data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).
No charge, all welcome. Vale Inn, Adlington Road, talk begins 6.30pm
