Bollington SciBar: Psychedelics and mental health: hype, hope, and healing?

Vale Inn, Adlington Rd, Bollington SK10 5JT

Monday 14th July

The Vale Inn

SciBar is science in a bar - an invited speaker gives a talk on a scientific topic while people enjoy a drink or meal, with a Q&A afterwards. Bollington SciBar takes place at the Vale Inn in Bollington.

The speaker in July is Professor Sara Tai, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Consultant Clinical Psychologist, University of Manchester.

Psychedelics have become a hot topic in the media and in popular culture, with growing interest in their potential to help with problems that affect people's mental health. From depression and anxiety to trauma and addiction, psychedelic-assisted therapy is being explored in research settings around the world as a new way to support emotional healing and wellbeing. But what does the science really say? And what actually happens in psychedelic therapy?

Come and join us in the illuminating world of psychedelics to question whether they can really promise a transformation in therapeutic approaches for mental health and well-being. This talk offers a down-to-earth introduction to psychedelic-assisted therapy, explaining how it works, what makes it different from other mental health interventions, and what we know so far about its benefits and risks. We will discover how psychedelics have the potential to offer a paradigm shift within how we think about mental health.

Rather than being a quick fix, this approach encourages people to explore their thoughts and emotions in a deeper way. Whether you're curious, hopeful, or simply sceptical, this is a chance to learn more about a fascinating area of mental health research that could change the way we think about healing. This is not a talk about another drug-based 'silver bullet', but an opportunity to step outside the pillbox and learn just how much the mind can do for itself.

No charge, all welcome. Talk begins 6.30pm.
