A local man and current staff member has signed a playing contract with Macclesfield FC.

First Team Goalkeeper Coach, Steve Hodgson has agreed a playing deal ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, a few months shy of his 40th birthday.

The Maxonian will likely be a back-up choice keeper for the new season.

Steve will simultaneously coach and play for Macc in the North West Counties Football League.

"The 39-year-old has played a major role in our pre-season fixtures to date and has impressed with a number of fine performances.

"Steve represented England at a variety of youth levels, before signing professional terms with Manchester City back in the summer of 1998.

"From there, the Macclesfield-born 'keeper would sign for his hometown club and progress to the likes of Chester City, Cliftonville, Wrexham, Nuneaton Borough and Leek Town during an eighteen-year career.

"After making over 400 appearances in total, Steve then turned his attention to the coaching side of the game.

"Initial spells at the Cheshire FA and Macclesfield Town followed, before Steve was appointed as First Team Goalkeeper Coach at Sky Bet League Two side, Mansfield Town.

"Steve also enjoyed a two-year stint at Stoke City as an Academy Goalkeeper Coach, in addition to crossing the Welsh border to become Head Goalkeeping Coach at Wrexham.

"We wish Steve every success ahead of the new campaign and will be discussing the move with him shortly."

The news comes less than 24 hours after announcing the signature of their first-ever goalkeeper.

English 22-year-old Ben Pierce has his own charity foundation, which helps sick children.

He will be training with Macc's latest signing, and goalkeeping coach.
