A Tytherington home was set on fire after being struck by lightning during last night's storm.

The fire happened on Melford Drive in the early hours of this morning.

A spokesperson for the fire service said the male homeowner was checked on by paramedics at the scene as a precaution.

Crews arrived at the scene shortly before 1am, with five fire engines from across the county called in to help tackle the blaze.

The spokesperson said: "On arrival, the crews found the property well alight. One main jet and two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the flames. A cordon was put in place by police while firefighting operations were underway."

Crews used a thermal imaging camera to check affected areas while crews continued to damp down.

Firefighters remain at the scene on Melford Drive.

This story will be updated with further information as it is provided.
