Macclesfield: one of the last bands to play Mash in 2022 will include a hometown hero.

Phil Cunningham (46) will perform at Mash Guru in December with his new band Sea Fever.

The Sutton-raised guitarist was meant to play in our town with his four bandmates in October, but was pushed back for two months.

A new date for the homecoming show for the Macclesfield guitar hero and his band been has been announced.

The Manchester five-piece will play in Phil's favourite hometown venue, found on 5 Back Wallgate, during the evening of Friday December 17.

The alternative act were scheduled to perform in Macc on October 30, but positive coronavirus tests led to the rescheduling just a few days before Christmas.

"It is a cool little venue," Cunningham said.

"The Macc gig was my idea, I know Peter [Mason] and Jane [Birch] who run it and they are such great people.

"I've had the odd drink in there and i just like the place really and I really like them so will play a little hometown gig."

The sound of Sea Fever takes shades from Factory Records, complimented by the fact Phil's other musical job is being in Macclesfield and Salford band New Order.

Their melodies also take inspiration from 1960s music.

Frontman Iwan Gronow's influence from being Johnny Marr's bassist is clear to hear, but he is an excellent performer in his own right.

Tom Chapman joins Phil on Guitar, meanwhile vocalist Beth Cassidy and drummer Elliot Barlow complete the line-up of the band.

All members live a stone's throw away from Manchester.

However, Mr Cunningham is the only Macclesfield musician in the band.

Phil, who will turn 47 in a fortnight, used to go to Henbury High School, and rose to prominence in the Britpop band Marion.

The Macc rockstar joined New Order in 2001, and has appeared on three studio albums with New Order.

He now splits his time between New Order and Sea Fever, as well as raising his family in Macclesfield.

It costs just £5 to go to the gig, but you must queue up before 8pm at Mash, as tickets are on the door only.

Mash Guru are delighted to host the band, who have just released their debut album Folding Lines.

Co-Owner Jane Birch said: "Mash Guru is elated to welcome Sea Fever for this most intimate (and no longer secret) of gigs.

"Thanks to Phil Cunningham, in particular, for bringing the 'Supergroup' home to Macclesfield, and to Mash, to play."

They have about 5,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

The support act will be local musician Hugo Kensdale, who will play his first gig in over two years.

"It'll be my first gig since Covid kicked off, and I'm very much looking forward to playing some new songs in my hometown, supporting Sea Fever."
