Macclesfield's first hip-hop sports bar will give back to grassroots football
A new hip-hop sports bar has opened in the heart of Macclesfield.
Remedy Bar and Kitchen is located in Unit 5 of Duke's Court, Macclesfield.
David Spruce (35) wants to combine his love for US sport and hip-hop culture into a unique bar for our town.
And some of their sales will even go towards supporting grassroots sport.
"Remedy Bar and Kitchen is a sprinkle of California in the heart of Macclesfield", said David.
"We offer vegetarian and vegan food, and are a sports bar with a late night bar offering. That's our three niches."
"There's not really a specific vegetarian and vegan offering at night in Macclesfield.
"I'm a vegetarian and I have struggled for the last seven years to get food that tastes or is similar to what the meat offerings are in the town.
"Macclesfield is growing. It is becoming like a little Altrincham. There's loads of businesses opening up left right and centre.
"We've had the Picturedrome and the new steak restaurant [open up on Castle Street], so what not have quality nighttime vegetarian and vegan food?"
From a vegan chilli burrito wrap, goats cheese bagel to quoin nachos. All of the sports bar favourites are here, but with a healthier twist.
David, who also works in the mortgage industry, and is chairman of Bollington Football Club, and will hope to give back to grassroots sport through his new business.
"Because we are getting local football teams in as our customers, each week we will have a new beer where for every bottle that we sell, £1 will be given to Bollington Football Club," he also said.
"It has been tough for lockdown and can allow the club to buy a piece of land to develop it for the next generation."
Remedy opened just before the new year, and will be the place to be throughout this year's sporting calendar.
"We're going to do quizzes, try to get some local football teams in, and of course host big events for the big games," added David.
"We've got a Super Bowl party coming up on the 13th. We've got cheerleaders, barbecue, beer pong. We're going to make it an All-American themed night. And the best Super Bowl experience you can get in Macclesfield.
"There's a real following of American football and the NFL in this town. It surprises me. I love hockey and basketball as well, we'll have some big events for the NBA finals in the summer too. Basketball and hip-hop fit like hand in glove."
Entrepreneur David has helped clean up the paper cups and cigarette butts that once littered the entrance to Duke's Court, from the entrance via Mill Street, to help increase the reputation of the area which has seen three new businesses open in the past three months.
Remedy already have over 1000 followers on Facebook and Instagram, who have enjoyed their entertainment, food and refreshments.
"For our drinks, we've tried to relate things to California for a bit," David explained.
"We've got Brooklyn Lager on draught which is an east coast drink but American. It is quite hard to find American beer other than Budweiser in town, so it sells really well.
"We've also got Estrella on tap, as a huge population of California speak Spanish. We've also got Red Stripe, gins, whiskeys, and we seem to sell a lot of Cognac, which is very hip-hop.
'In fact a lot of our best-selling spirits are mentioned in rap songs like Hennessy and Courvoisier. Then we have the vodka selection which is Ciroc, owned by P-Diddy. We've got Duppy White which is Kano's rum. Anything which relates to hip-hop, rap and grime we try to stock it."
David has DJ'ed in venues across Duke's Court for years, and now has grabbed the potential of having one of his own.
"I believe we can actually turn Duke's Court into a mini-Macc Northern Quarter," David remarked.
"Next door there is a beautiful little kitchen [Courtyard Kitchen], the kids love it. It adds variety. And there's different bars across Duke's Court, with every business having their own unique identity.
"And a collective vision thinking about the bigger picture for the town and Duke's Court.
"I see so many people walking past our street and we need to change the image and that is what we are here to do.
"We want to get more footfall on this side of town. We're a fun and friendly bar, and want everyone to have a good time.
In the short term future they will add a mural to their walls to add to their feel of mini-America, and add more screens. They're also about to launch a new menu, which will introduce milkshakes.
Remedy is a sports bar by Macclesfield, for Macclesfield.
"What I like about Macclesfield is that we are the underdog," David said of his favourite thing about Macc.
"People need to tap into the potential this place has got. We are on the mainline of train connections to London to Manchester, and I don't think we are given its props.
"There are a lot of great people and creativity in his town, but we just need a bit of a boost. We need a bit of investment from the council, from entrepreneurs, from big companies and push the fact this is a unique town that is affordable to live in at the moment.
"If you've got an idea, Macc is a good place to start. And that's what I'm doing with this bar."
