Macclesfield: 12 Football related crime incidents in Cheshire following England EURO 2020 final

By Alex Greensmith 13th Jul 2021

England's EURO 2020 final loss caused 12 crimes which our county's cops were called to on Sunday.

Macclesfield Nub News contacted Cheshire Constabulary regarding football related crimes recorded on Sunday, after England's footballers lost on penalties to Italy.

Cheshire Police were unable to confirm how many were in Macclesfield, and chose not to reveal the nature of the crimes. But they did have this to say:

"Here in Cheshire we recorded 12 football related incidents on Sunday 11 July and six people were arrested," said Cheshire Constabulary in a statement.

No specific case was commented on, so however, they were able to inform that most of the 12 incidents and six arrests were predominantly related to Domestic incidents.

The crimes, which took place in Cheshire homes, were likely instigated by England's performance.

A study by Staffordshire organisation Pathway Project found abuse surged by 38% nationwide when England lost in previous World Cups. While this was a separate tournament to the European Championship, there was likely a similar outcome.

Research found the number of domestic abuse cases reported to Lancashire Police force in the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups surged by 38 per cent on the days when England lost. Stats for Cheshire Police and Macclesfield in this time are unavailable.

This figure also went up when England drew, or even won. Many of these incidents are connected to alcohol.

If you or someone you know in Macclesfield or Cheshire East needs help with domestic abuse you should call the 24 hour domestic violence helpline number 0808 2000 247.

Help is available on the Cheshire East Council website, which can direct you to local services.

Elsewhere in England football news, we reported on a Macclesfield FC player speaking on national radio following the abuse of the three English players who missed the crucial penalties.
