Macclesfield: The first use for Mill Street's Marks and Spencer has been revealed.

The food and clothing store on 33 Mill Street will shut in winter 2022 or early 2023, once their new M&S food outlet store opens on the Barracks Mill site off've Back Lane.

As a result, plans have already been submitted for the use of the building, which is a centrepiece to Macclesfield's high street.

While we don't know what may go inside the building, a 5G communications tower could be installed, 75-foot from ground level.

Mobile Broadband Network Limited has asked permission to put a mast on top of the shop, to be shared by phone networks once in use.

A document submitted to the council as part of the application by Ryan Marshall said: "This specific proposal forms part of an integral requirement for EE Ltd, ESN and H3G LTE to expand their respective 5G telecommunications network across Macclesfield.

"Mobile phone base stations operate on a low power and accordingly base stations therefore need to be located in the areas they are required to serve.

"Taking into account the factors of technical constraints, available sites and planning constraints we consider that this site and design clearly represents the optimum environmental solution."

The public can make comments on the 5G mast until January 5.

Other locations in Macclesfield were considered by MBNL including the Chestergate crossing (on Natwest), Craven House, Jordangate, and the Sue Ryder car park on Churchill Way. All were deemed unsuitable.

The Reading company would pay £490 to Cheshire East for the rights to install the super-fast internet kit.

Supporting documents for planning application 21/6030M can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website.

A final decision will be made by January 20.

Marks and Spencer have been contacted for comment.
